This year, our nation celebrates the centenary of Macario Pineda (1912-1950), a writer significant to Philippine letters, one whose broad understanding of Filipino culture and masterful renditions of local color continue to present a way of seeing and being in this age of globalization.

As its way of honoring Pineda, the Ateneo de Manila University’s School of Humanities, with the assistance of its Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and Kagawaran ng Filipino, is holding various events this August (also known as the Buwan ng Wika) in said university’s Katipunan Avenue campus.

The English translation of Pineda’s Ang Ginto sa Makiling (entitled Gold in Makiling, penned by Dr. Soledad S. Reyes and published by Anvil Publishing) will be launched on August 1, 430-600 pm, at the Natividad Galang Fajardo Conference Room, De la Costa Hall.

An exhibition on Pineda, entitled Sa Bawat Looy na Bulaklak, Ang Langit ni Ka Martin: Macario Pineda, will run from August 2 to August 30, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, at the Pardo de Tavera Room of the Old Rizal Library Building.

The installments of the lecture series entitled Si Macario Pineda, And Walang Maliw na Bituin: Isang Serye ng Panayam will be held on August 2, 7, 9, 14, 22 and 29. All the lectures will be held from 4:30 to 6:00 pm at the Escaler Hall of the Science Education Complex (SEC). The sequence of the lecturers is as follows: National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera (“Ang Bayan sa Nayon sa Panitikan ni Macario Pineda”), Edgar Calabia Samar (“Ang Nobelistikong Pagsisiyasat sa mga Nobela ni Macario Pineda”), D. M. Reyes (“Ang Enkwentro ng mga Diwata at Mortal sa Ang Ginto sa Makiling at sa Kolektibong Kamalayan ng Timog Asya”), Fr. Jose Mario Francisco, S.J. (“Ang Tao at Lipunan sa mga Akda ni Macario Pineda”), Luna Sicat-Cleto (“Ang Sanaysay Bilang Tinig ng Rehabilitasyon: Isang Pagbasa ng Sabi ni Ingkong Terong ni Macario Pineda”) and Eduardo Jose E. Calasanz (“Ang Eskatolohiya ni Macario Pineda”).
